Last week we attend The Octavia E. Butler Celebration of Arts & Activism, culminating event presented by author, filmmaker and Cosby Endowed Chair in the Humanities at Spelman College, Dr. Tananarive Due.  The two-day event featured panel discussions, intimate conversations and a Black Science Fiction Books Bazaar.

The highlight of the event series was the panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Due.  Audience members and those watching via the live feed were treated to a rousing conversation that focused on the variations of activism, how people can get involved in a movement or begin their own and the correlation between Octavia Butler’s literature and activism, then and now.  Panelists included Adrienne Marie Brown, Junot Diaz, dream hampton, John Jennings, Bree Newsome, and Nndei Okorafor.

Check out images and video from the series below, learn more about the Octavia Butler Celebration here, and watch the panel discussion from last year’s event here.

Wednesday, April 16th-Atlanta History Center:

Food Network’s own Pat and Gina Neely made an appearance promoting their third cookbook, Back Home with the Neely’s. The best-selling couple entertained the crowd, regaling them with cooking and entrepreneurial tips, Gina’s George Foreman Grill campaign that resulted in her svelte figure, and Pat’s hilarious encounter with Judge Judy.

Folks who arrived early were treated to samples from some of the recipes featured in the book, prepared by Viking Store & Cooking School chefs.

In their signature style, Pat and Gina have taken the recipes they were raised on and updated them to make them more approachable for today’s readers.  Inside, you’ll find 100 recipes, ranging from Small Batch Strawberry Jam to Brunswick Stew.
